Melvoin was a musician who played keyboards and sang backup vocals for Prince's band, The Revolution, and the two were romantically involved in the early 1980s. Sheila E., a percussionist and singer, was also part of Prince's band and the two were romantically linked in the mid-1980s.

Prince was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1958 and grew up in a musical family. His father was a pianist and songwriter, and his mother was a jazz singer.
